I have just watched ‘The Social Network’, a Hollywood movie by David Fincher released in 2010 based on the bestseller book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’ by Ben Mezrich. Let me tell you for those who haven’t seen the movie, it’s a bit by bit visual biography of the boy who changed the language of the social network and became billionaire only at the age of 23 with his innovative idea which we know as ‘Facebook’.
Yes, I am talking about none other than Mark Zuckerberg, who brought the social media network to that height where no other had ever thought or expected before.
The film starts with a tiff between Mark and his girlfriend Erica Albright and they got separated. Mark drank that whole night feeling blue about the break up and wrote several posts in his blog on his good and bad feelings about Erica. To put his mind off her, he engaged himself with Kirkland House Facebook, his own house profile database of Harvard University. He suddenly got an idea of comparing two girls together by giving a ranking system to all users of Harvard University network. And to collect a lots of profile images of girls from different houses, he hacked different profile databases of different houses. In a couple of hours he designed the ranking program with the help of his good friend Eduardo and sent it to few of his Harvard friends. The rating game became so popular that it crashed the Harvard network system with an overloaded traffic of 22000 hits by 4 A.M in the morning!Mark didn’t only breach the system that night but thoughtlessly posted his each activity in his blog. As a consequence, he was summoned by Harvard university authority and punished with six month academic probation. However, that could stop neither Mark’s mighty spirit nor his instant popularity as a gifted programmer as was already at the threshold of creating history. Though he faced various rough phases during the development stage of his site, but he prevailed over all and with the help of his college friends; finally he launched his dream project ‘The Facebook’ in 2004.
During his journey, he came across with both sweet and bitter experiences. Within three years, his site was liked by a million users worldwide and Mark Zuckerberg became a billionaire as a result of Facebook. At the same time, he was also involved in various legal disputes that were initiated by others in the group, who claimed a share of the company based upon their involvement during the development phase of Facebook.
Well that is a brief of the whole two hour movie. But, those who want to see the genius to work and creating history in front of their eyes, ‘The Social Media’ is a must see movie for them!
